Adopting is a process that means that a child from different reasons cannot be raised by the birth parents and thus, other persons can become the legal parents, called adoption parents.
Adoption is a process that has started a long time ago, when people unable to financially raise their children, where giving them or part of them away. This happened also because the number of children per family was big, considering there were no contraceptives and it was illegal to abort.
Because the early adoptions had no legal terms and the number was increasing, the need of controlling it was necessary. The first state to issue an adoption law was Massachusetts in 1851.

To make sure that it will go as smoothly as possible and that there will be no problems on the way, the most important thing is to make sure that you are aware with the laws in your state. Each state has specific laws and they limit you in your choice. Laws are usually to ensure that the adoption is made safe and that there will be no other issues arising in the future. The laws are to set restriction as to how big the fees that you can be charged with to be, who can consent to an adoption, who can adopt and what are the confidentiality terms in an adoption relation.
Also you need to know that you can adopt an infant child or you can adopt a child of any age up to 18. According to the age of the child there are other set of conditions imposed. You can adopt from public or from private institutions. You just need to use the most appropriate one. You can adopt from foster cares, where usually there are abandoned children of a higher age or children that were taken from their birth parents because of the improper way they were raised. In these cases it might happen that the child being abused and neglected needs more attention and care from the adoptive parents in order to give the child the confidence needed.
When adopting from private agencies you need to make sure that the agency that you register to is suitable. There are agencies that favor those of a certain religion, or there are those agencies that will let the birth parents to look for the adoptive parents and there are agencies that are for open relation , meaning that the adoptive parents and the birth parents will get to know each other and that the birth parents are allowed in some matter to take part to the upbringing of the child. In a closed relation, the birth parents are not going to meet the adoptive parents and they will not have information about where they stay and who they are; in the same time the adoptive parents will not know the background of the birth parents. This type of relation is more rarely these days.
Adopting a child is a beautiful thing, but the process can be hard and long and who wishes to adopt should be informed about it as much as possible.
